How do you feel after a good laugh? Energized, relaxed, happy, upbeat are descriptions that come to mind.
How do you feel before an interview? Anxious, nervous and worried are some of the emotions that people endure prior to the interview.
Here's the good news. You can feel much better about yourself and much more relaxed prior to the interview if you laugh, if you laugh hard and you laugh loud.
It's easy! As part of your interview prep, structure some time to laugh. One of my LinkedIn connections wrote me after a presentation I made to job seekers "I've watched Jeff Dunham three times since your presentation. It's the best job search tip I've heard."
Confused?
Job search is a mind game.
You HAVE to be on top of your game when walking into that interview or doing that telephone interview. Laughter helps relax people and I strongly encourage job seekers to get a good laugh before the interview.
There are a number of ways you can do this.• Listen to your favorite comedian or humorist for a short period prior to the telephone call. You want to feel good about yourself: You want to feel upbeat. Laughter will create this mood. Remember, transition and job search is a mind game.
• If you do not have a favorite comedian, go to YouTube and search for "Comedy." Watch a video for a few minutes immediately prior to the interview.
• Jeff Dunham is just one of the comedians I suggest people watch as part of the telephone interview preparation. His video featuring Achmed the dead Terrorist was one of the top five watched videos on YouTube last year. Beware, he is politically incorrect, but gosh, he's funny. But it doesn't matter who you watch, just watch or listen to someone that will make you laugh, immediately prior to your interview.
• Another trick I suggest is that you ask a friend to phone you fifteen minutes before the interview and tell you a number of jokes. And for many people out there, off-color or blue jokes from your friends are often the ones that will get you laughing the hardest.
• Now, when you do that telephone interview, the recruiter will hear you smile. Sounds goofy, but if you can make it happen, you will make that job happen. Just be careful that you don't repeat that off-color joke!
